In the 90s when Broly appeared in some Dragon Ball Z movies, everyone was impressed by Broly's power, and even after he became a canonical character in Dragon Ball Super, many people still don't understand how a Saiyan as strong as him can be so powerful.

In this article, we will explore everything about Broly to understand why he is the legendary Super Saiyan.

Broly is one of the biggest brawlers in Dragon Ball, an anime where practically everyone is a brawler, but he is one of the most powerful. He really stands out both in the movie version and in the current one. To understand the reasons behind his differences, it's worth delving deeper into who he is and what has happened to him so far. Let's dive in.

Dragon Ball Z

The Broly from Dragon Ball Z only appears in a few movies and is not part of the anime's canon, it's like filler content. He is a Saiyan who was born around the same time as Goku. Even as a baby, he was very agitated by Kakarot's crying and eventually loses control completely when he meets the adult Goku. The Goku's crying bothered him so much that he turned into a berserk when he encountered Goku as an adult.

Broly is not a normal Saiyan, he is the so-called Legendary Super Saiyan who appears every 1000 years and has power far beyond the norm. He can transform into a Super Saiyan and also has the transformation of the Legendary Super Saiyan, with green hair. This transformation is very powerful, and he simply cannot control his actions in this form, becoming completely berserk. There are three movies featuring Broly, and in each case, a real task force had to be assembled to deal with the Legendary Super Saiyan.

Dragon Ball Super

In another movie, Broly returned in Dragon Ball Super, but this time he was rebooted and became part of the canon.

A cool thing to note is that in this new version, which I honestly find much better, Broly's origin story has changed a bit. He was born around the same time as Prince Vegeta and had a very high power level that made King Vegeta envy him. In order to not have someone so powerful around, the king sent little Broly to the planet Vampa, a completely isolated place, and Paragus, his father, followed him.

40 years pass, and Broly and Paragus have been on the planet Vampa all this time. Broly has become incredibly powerful, so much so that he wears a collar controlled by Paragus that shocks him if he loses control. They lived there as best they could until Frieza finds the two Saiyans and takes them to Earth, with nefarious intentions, of course. Frieza wanted to use Broly's power as a weapon of revenge. When Frieza brought Broly and Paragus to Earth, this version of Broly didn't seek revenge against Goku, but against Vegeta, naturally. This led to a fierce battle where Vegeta even had to resort to the Super Saiyan God transformation to turn the tide. Goku had to step in as well.

One of Broly's main characteristics is that he becomes stronger and more uncontrollable as the fight goes on. It's similar to the Hulk, where he becomes more powerful but loses control in the process. He entered a state called Fury during his fight with Vegeta, where his green aura surrounds him and his eyes turn green. He learns and adapts during the fight, making it difficult for his opponents. Vegeta even had to ask for Goku's help, which shows just how intense the battle became. Frieza, wanting Broly to lose control completely, even kills Paragus during the fight. When Broly sees his father dead and is no longer wearing the collar, he unleashes all the fury he had been holding back, transforming into the Legendary Super Saiyan. This is the moment when the real battle begins, and Broly's power seems limitless as he becomes more and more furious and unstoppable, leading Goku and Vegeta to fuse into Gogeta Super Saiyan Blue to stop him.

Broly's Fury in the fight against Vegeta

Before transforming into a Super Saiyan, Broly enters a state of Fury, where his body is surrounded by a green aura, and his eyes turn green. This unique power is something only Broly possesses, and it plays a crucial role in his strength. In this state, while still wearing the containment collar, Broly starts losing control, becoming more unpredictable and adapting his fighting style to counter every attack thrown at him. He grows visibly stronger and larger, pushing Vegeta to his limits until he asks Goku for help. Paragus's death only intensifies Broly's rage, and he unleashes his full power, reaching the transformation of the Legendary Super Saiyan. This transformation unleashes all of Broly's accumulated rage, making him stronger and more fearsome than ever. His power seems to have no limits, and he becomes a force to be reckoned with, even overpowering Goku and Vegeta in their Super Saiyan Blue forms. Currently, Goku is training Broly to help him maintain control over his immense power.

Broly's strength can be attributed to two main reasons:

- Genetics and his experiences on the planet Vampa.

Born with genes that amplify his rage, Broly's Saiyan power is directly related to his ability to harness his fury. His transformation into the Legendary Super Saiyan is a testament to this inner rage, with only a few Saiyans in the universe able to achieve such power. The way Broly's power grows uncontrollably can be likened to the power of a Great Ape without the typical transformation, due to the suppression of his tail by Paragus on Vampa. This explains Broly's unique abilities and immense strength, making him a formidable opponent for any Saiyan.

The current iteration of Broly in Dragon Ball Super is not a villain like his previous version in Dragon Ball Z. Everyone is excited to see him in action again, now with unique transformations and controlled power.
